JOB SUMMARY

The primary function of the Cost Accountant is to maintain accurate inventory costing, state tax records and filings, invoicing and accounts receivable records, accurate fixed assets and depreciation, and complete monthly and quarterly functions associated with the above responsibilities. Other responsibilities include monthly account reconciliations and general ledger maintenance.

 

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain accurate costing of all inventory items.  Work with the respective division and location operational teams to ensure all items are properly costed.  Analyze and understand all variances and record necessary adjustments.
  • Assess tax exposure by state, including sales and use, as well as income.  Maintain state tax records and prepare all necessary filings.
  • Maintain customer files to ensure accurate information, including current exemption certificates, resale certificates, etc.  And update accounting software with this information.
  • Prepare and send all customer invoices.  Forecast payment receipt dates for Cash Forecasting.
  • Track and report order entry by salesperson.
  • Maintain accounts receivable records and contact customers when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate capital asset records within the fixed asset software.  Provide reports and post monthly entries for depreciation.
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations with appropriate supporting documentation.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly journal entries for assigned areas of responsibility and enter into accounting software, including reconciling accounts, estimating reserves, and cut-off entries.
  • Assist with quarterly and annual audits.

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

 

CONTACT

  • Daily contact with all levels of personnel.
  • Direct daily contact with Controller and Senior Accountant.

 

DIRECTION

  • Performs under limited supervision, with no direction needed for routine duties
  • Work performed to a large extent on own responsibility
  • Refer unusual problems to the Controller with suggestions for corrective action

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of accounting rules and ability to apply those rules in routine tasks.
  • Knowledgeable in various computer software programs, including advanced skills in the Microsoft Office package.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 2 years of accounting experience in a similar position

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Proficient written and verbal communication.
  • Problem solving abilities.
  • Analytical and research skills required to resolve accounting issues, primarily in cost accounting functions.
